A 1996 study, released by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, determined that both the number and losses from fraud are increasing dramatically, with costs to U.S. businesses estimated over $400 billion annually. Fraud auditing is a series of processes designed to locate and identify potential internal and external schemes, limiting a company's exposure to losses. "In contrast to traditional audit and sampling techniques, these procedures are intended to both locate fraud and identify control failures," says Jonathan E. Turner, CFE, a managing director with WTI. In addition to statistical and vulnerabilitiy analysis techniques, fraud auditing includes adjustments for industry specific and cultural issues.
